Breeding

Grullo (grulla) reining quarter horse, Rawhide Whiz

bullet

June 4 Alaska foaled a VERY tall and yet already-muscular grullo or grullo roan colt during the night. He is very light, so should be a lighter (silvery) grullo, and may also roan. He already has stripes on his forehead!

bullet

June 2 Alaska is changing rapidly, and has had a little wax since last night. Last year, she was 3 weeks past the 340-average. She may go earlier this time if these signs are real!

bullet

May 29 Alaska is our last mare to foal, and she's keeping me guessing. She has half a bag, but her teats have begun to fill and she has a couple little beads of liquid tonight. Last year, she foaled at about 360 days, but that won't be until mid June if she follows suit this year. Who knows? So, we're watching...

bullet

May 26 Sad news today...Peppy had a stillborn foal this morning. We we with her through the delivery, but she apparently had a detached placenta, and a "red bag delivery." We tried to get the foal out quickly, but he was not able to be revived.

bullet

May 24 Our orphan foal, Andy, is getting along and still with us. We have more obstacles to overcome, but are thankful that he made it through his first rough few days. We are watching Peppy and Alaska now, as their foals are hopefully soon to arrive! Also, "Pepperjac Scooty" has arrived in Germany after her month in quarantine. She has shed off a beautiful silver color. And, "Chunk" leaves tomorrow for his new home in Montana.

bullet

May 18 Three foals in 24 hours...one mother rejecting. Say prayers that another mother will pick him up! Bailey and Magic had grullos (colt, filly) and Scoot had a darker foal with leg bars and a lot of dorsal/neck striping, but he's darker so will probably be black.

bullet

May 9 Foal watch again...five of our eight foals are due in the next 3 weeks, so we're beginning watch the the big finale of the season! Magic's foal is due 5/20. She's had 2 colts in a row, and both were right on time. We'll expect a close-to-due-date foal again, but if it's a filly, they say it could come a couple days earlier. Bailey is coming along now, too. See the Foal page for final due dates.

bullet

April 28 Lena's filly is finally here, and she surprised me! At 8:30 am, she didn't look ready to foal so I turned her out to graze for a while. At 10 am, she had a dun filly on the ground in the pasture.

bullet

April 23 Cody's colt is here! He was 40" tall with perfect legs when he unfolded and stood up. We didn't get the color we wanted, but man, is he sweet and pretty!

bullet

April 17 G has another baby! Andi's mare foaled a red dun colt with fantastic bone and a wide forehead!

bullet

April 15 G's first baby is on the ground! We'll know more later today about gender/color. This foal resides in OK and belongs to B4 Ranch. Lena and Cody will hopefully add their Rawhide Whiz babies very soon, and Andi in CT (a shipped semen customer) e-mailed to tell me they are on foal watch. We will suddenly get to see G's babies very soon, it sounds!

bullet

April 11 No baby from Lena or Cody yet, but Chic's filly has a name: Kittie. She loves to be rubbed, and leans into it like a cat that's being petted. :-)

bullet

April 6 She's here! Chic had her filly during the night. We're waiting for daylight, and may have to wait a few more weeks. She is either black or blue roan. Later in the day update:  Lena has been secluding herself in the pasture during the day and laying down a lot. She and Cody are now in the barn being watched. They don't "look" like they're ready to foal, but due to Lena's behavior especially, we're watching. They are both bred to Rawhide Whiz. "G" also has foals due soon from some nice mares at B4 Ranch in Oklahoma.

bullet

April 5 We have wax! Chic is past due, and tonight has a little wax on her teats. Check back often...we hope to have a baby any time! :-)

bullet

April 3 Still waiting! Chic's bag is nearly full, and when it looks ready we'll start the countdown. Most of the mares have been dewormed again and have received their spring vaccinations.

bullet

March 3 We are only 2 weeks away from our first foal's due date! Chic is expecting a foal from our grullo roan stallion, Crowheart WYO Boy. What a roping and gaming prospect this will be! Visit our 2008 Foals page to watch for his/her arrival.

bullet

February 6 We're looking forward to the 2008 foals to see if Mainly Merlin continues to produce 100% color, and to welcome our first Rawhide Whiz foal to the world. A web page listing our pairings for 2008 is located here.

Phone Problems, June 12-13: Due to the flooding and/or tornadoes in the Midwest, our phone service has been inconsistent. If you try to reach us and can't get through, please call my cell number: 712-370-0851.
Thank you to all that have contacted us to inquire about how we've weathered the storms. Our prayers are with all those that have had damage, injuries, and lost loved ones in the tornadoes and floods this year.
We are doing fine, and have luckily missed the tornadoes. We lost our big barn door last night, which landed on top of the horse trailer. Just yesterday, I was contemplating moving that horse trailer because I don't like where it is sitting. BUT, if I had done so, the barn door would have gone over the top of the fence right into the mares and foals that were standing with their butts to the wind and rain right there. Lucky break or divine intervention...either way, we are fortunate!
Other than a solid hour of hail a couple nights ago, we've just had to cope with water rushing through our stalls/barns/pastures and some wind damage.

bullet

May 27 Our new blue roan mare is here, and she is CUTE! She needs some weight put on, as she's giving it all to her baby. Her disposition seems top notch, she has beautiful legs, and we are pleased with what we see so far!  Also, Merlin has another grullo foal! He has 14 foals so far, with 12 being grullo, plus one dun and one red dun. This one can be seen at the B4 Ranch in Oklahoma.

bullet

May 5 Holi is home from her first 30 days of training, and I sure wish we could send her on to reining training. She has the moves and the mind. Hopefully, this summer, I'll be able to ride her a little. Unlikely for this workaholic, but I'll try!

bullet

May 1 There are new pictures on Rye's web page from today. The color wasn't quite captured...he's a purplish-blue color in real life. Gorgeous!

bullet

April 1 Doll is home from the trainer, and Holi has gone to take her place. Doll has a heck of a handle on her for just having 30 days. The trainer said she has speed and a ton of potential, and I told him he might get her back in the fall of 2009 for some roping training. We'll see!

bullet

March 13 The robins are back, the mature horses are beginning to shed, Chic is making a bag, and we are expecting RAIN instead of snow. Hooray! Things are looking up, although we do have mud everywhere. Short term, though.

bullet

March 5 Hooray! Spring is coming finally! Rye, our grullo roan Hancock-bred stallion is shedding his winter coat. I guess those tough Hancock horses don't need the warm hair as long as other horses do?  :-)  We can't wait to see him shed off. He is looking GORGEOUS now, with a much bigger butt and wider chest than last year. We'll have new pictures of him now that he's nearly 4 on his web page in a couple months.

bullet

March 3 We have regretfully decided to offer Mainly Merlin for sale due to having too many stallions for the size of our program. He's been a fantastic money earner for us, producing gorgeous foals that have ALL been colored (9 grullos, 1 dun, 1 red dun in first two foal crops). Click here to view his web page.

bullet

January 4, 2008 It's a new year, and time for some new news. Rawhide Whiz is returning to training with Diamond R Quarter Horses until the breeding season begins. Following the breeding season, he will return to training and begin his show career. Photos and video to come soon!

bullet

July 4 We have two confirmed pregnancies for Rawhide Whiz using frozen semen so far this year (both mares in Kentucky that we shipped frozen semen to). G seems to have excellent semen that both ships and freezes well.

bullet

June 21  We are almost through breeding for the year, and will I be glad! Fighting the MUD has been extremely trying. If my barn weren't a pole barn, it would have floated away. :-)  Rawhide Whiz has settled 100% of all mares with cooled shipped semen that have been ultrasounded/palpated by a vet prior to ordering for both of the years he's been breeding. Merlin is getting a break this year so I can get more foals by Rye on the ground. We're looking forward already to our 2009 Foals!

bullet

June 4 Three years and counting...Merlin has now produced 15 out of 15 foals with dun factor:  13 grullos, 1 dun, 1 red dun. Not only are they pretty colored, but they are gorgeous overall to boot!

bullet

April 14 It seems early, but I guess it isn't. We're already planning our 2009 foal crop, and have a rough draft web page here. We also have a couple broodmares for sale that are listed at the top of our Mare page.

bullet

February 6 We have settled on breeding fees for Rawhide Whiz, and have decided to include FREE SHIPPING for the first shipment of cooled fresh semen if collected/shipped from our farm (this is standard unless you ask for our vet to collect). Even better...if you book and pay in full by 2/28/2008, you get $100 off the breeding fee!
