Kind of hard to get out for horse activities when the trailer is snowed in...

More cold for Iowa and much of the northern states makes for pretty scenery. The colorful picture is actually a sunRISE and not a sunset. Our sunrises are normally less colorful, but the ice crystals in the air must be providing a better canvas!

March 17 "When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us." - Helen Keller  Losing Rawhide Whiz was a devastating time for us. This spring, I've had some sad moments as I've remembered the joy he brought me daily as I spent time with him. Now, looking forward to Berry Sweet Whizard's foals that will soon arrive, I am beginning to recognize how blessed we were to find a stallion as sweet and talented as he is, and I recognize that he has helped me heal.

February 12 Tootsie has made it to her new home at JR Equine, despite the southern snow storm and all the snow that has slowed horse travels this winter. We had to lead her about 1/2 mile up the road almost to the highway, because the shipper was afraid to come down the country road due to packed and slick snow cover. Tootsie was a champ, and didn't mind the long walk away from her buddies at all. What an awesome filly!

January 16 Another year has come and gone, and in 2 months we'll be on foal watch! We are excited to see Berry Sweet Whizard's first foals arrive. The 2010 foal web page is up here!

February 17 The snow has been with us since early December now. Normally, snow melts within a couple weeks, but we have deep snow in drifts and ditches that hasn't melted. In fact, we've had two horses with minor leg strains and last night, a very scary incident: a mare laid down to roll and got stuck upside down because she picked a place where the snow was deep due to a dip in the ground below. Thankfully, we noticed the other horses congregated around her, saw her legs sticking up in the air, and ran to the rescue.

October 11 Tonight we're thinking of Mary Scruggs and family at 6 Shoe Quarter Horses in Mississippi, who lost their half brother to our late stallion, Hootie. We know from experience that it is extremely hard to lose such an important member of the herd, and such a partner in one's goals for the future.

October 1 Great news in an e-mail from UC Davis... Spin Whiz Me by Rawhide Whiz and out of Sooty Cowboy is homozygous for dun factor and also carries a cream gene!

July 17, 2009 Our breeding and ultrasounding are completed for the year, and all mares are pregnant except Chic, who we are breeding now due to her late foal in June. We're looking forward to an excellent foal crop in 2010!
